Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety

PDS has established itself as the only truly focused international forum for papers on the expanding science and practice of pharmacoepidemiology, addressing issues on the safety, efficacy, proper use of and quality of prescription medicines.

Pharmacoepidemiology is the study of interactions between drugs and human populations, investigating, in real conditions of life, benefits, risks and use of drugs. Pharmacoepidemiology applies to drugs the methods and/or reasoning of both pharmacology and epidemiology.

Pharmacoepidemiology is the study of the utilization and effects of drugs in large numbers of people; it provides an estimate of the probability of beneficial effects of a drug in a population and the probability of adverse effects. It can be called a bridge science spanning both clinical pharmacology and epidemiology.

Steps in Conducting a Drug Use Evaluation

  • Identify or Determine Optimal Use. An organization's established criteria are defined to compare optimal use with actual use. ...
  • Measure Actual Use. ...
  • Evaluate. ...
  • Intervene. ...
  • Evaluate the DUR Program. ...
  • Report the DUR Findings.

Using population and family-based studies, genetic epidemiologists assess the impact of genes in the population on the occurrence of human diseases.

If a reporter can't recall the name of the drug they were taking when they experienced an adverse event, this would not be a valid case. This concept also applies to adverse events. If a patient states that they experienced "symptoms", but cannot be more specific, such a report might technically be considered valid, but will be of very limited value to the pharmacovigilance department of the company or to drug regulatory authorities.
